The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team started fall play winning three out of their five doubles matches. Mackenzie White and Emma Hayman teamed up to defeat Irene Squillaci and Lauren Walker, from Abilene Christian, 9-7. Victoria Tessmar and Anya Villanueva beat Stefanie Peana and Kerryn Potgieter, from Texas Tech, 8-3. Ashley Bonner and Eliane Bourdages also won, defeating Carver and Alexsandra Vucic, from Abilene Christian, 9-7.
Singles play proved to be a little bit tougher. The Lobos only came out on top in six of their 16 matches. Ola Abou-Zerky, Manumea Durie, Victoria Tessmar, Anya Villanueva, Ashley Bonner and Mackenzie White all had at least one win on the day.
White, who won her doubles match and one of her singles matches, said everyone had a couple of tough matches.
“Everyone played well. We are just using this tournament to get warmed up for the season. Everyone is playing well so we just hope we keep improving. My doubles match was a challenge, but I am glad we came out on top. I hope tomorrow will be another good day of tennis.”
The second day of the UNM Fall Invite starts Saturday, Sept. 20 at 9 a.m. kicking off with Doubles play.
