The University of New Mexico men’s golf team shot a final round 287 (-1) to finish tied for fifth at the Topy Cup in Tanagura Japan today. The Lobos finished the tournament 12-over (292-297-287=876) at the 7,127-yard, par-72 Tanagura Country Club. Tohoku Fukushi University won the event with a 54-hole total of 835 (285-268-282, -29). Lamar was the top U.S. squad, placing second at 9-under (285-288-282=855).
New Mexico did finish ahead of the two other American teams, including UC Irvine (296-297-284=877, +13/7th) and No. 19 Charlotte (298-290-291=879, +15/8th).
Freshman James Erkenbeck led the way today with a 2-under 70 in his final round. Erkenbeck had four birdies in his round today and was staring at a 69 before stumbling in with a bogey on No. 18. He finished the tournament tied for 15th at 2-over (74-74-70=218).
Senior Steve Saunders bounced back from a second round 78 to shoot a 1-under 71 today. He was very steady throughout his final 18 holes, posting two birdies against one bogey. He finished the tournament tied for 19th at 3-over (70-78-71=219).
Senior Jon Sauer had the best overall showing for the Lobos, finishing tied for 12th in the individual race after a final round of 72. He shot a 54-hole total of 214 (71-71-72) to finish 2-under. His day has highlighted with an eagle 3 on the 541-yard, par-5 11th hole. Tohoku’s Yoshinori Fujimoto was medalist for the event at 14-under (70-64-68=202).
Junior Nick Geyer posted his second consecutive 74 to tie for 38th (77-74-74=225) in the 60 player field. Junior Brandon Putnam also competed for the Lobos’ today, shooting an 81 to finish 55th (78-79-81=238).
The Lobos return home for the 54th annual William H. Tucker Intercollegiate at the UNM Championship Course on Sept. 26-27.
