The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is tied for fifth following the second round of the Topy Cup in Tanagura, Japan. The Lobos shot a 9-over 297 at the 7,127-yard, par-72 Tanagura Country Club today. New Mexico is currently 13-over with a two-round total of 589 (292-297). Tohoku Fukushi University leads the event at 23-under (285-268=553).

Senior Jon Sauer led UNM with his second straight 71 today. He is currently tied for sixth at 2-under (71-71=142). Yoshinori Fujimoto leads the individual race for Tohoku Fukushi at 10-under (70-64=134). Sauer birdied his first two holes to go out in 35. His home nine included two more birdies and a pair of bogeys to finish in the red for the second straight day.

Freshman James Erkenbeck had another steady round of 74 today. He is tied for 26th after 36 holes at 4-over (74-74=148). Senior Steve Saunders is also tied for 26th after an 6-over 78 today (70-78=148).

Junior Nick Geyer shaved three strokes off his opening round with a 74 today. He is in a tie for 37th overall (77-74=151). Fellow junior Brandon Putnam is tied for 50th in the 60-player field with a two-day total of 157 (78-79, +13).

The Lobos finish play at the Topy Cup tomorrow with the third and final round. New Mexico hosts the annual William H. Tucker at the UNM Championship Course on Sept. 26-27.
