The University of New Mexico men’s golf team sent a junior-varsity contingent to the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend. After 36 holes of the event hosted by the Air Force Academy, the Lobos are in fourth place with a 579 total (291-288). Colorado State and UNLV are tied for the lead at 560 while Washington State is in third at 578. Senior Jacob Lestishen led New Mexico with a two-round total of 144 with a pair of 72s.

The Lobos shot a 291 in the morning round behind a solid 70 from redshirt freshman James Gehrke. Fellow redshirt freshman Shane McDonald led UNM in the afternoon 18 with a 70 of his own. Lestishen’s 144 is tied for 11th in the individual race while sophomore Alex Zannes is tied for 22nd (73-73=146).

McDonald posted a 147 (77-70) and is tied for 32nd while sophomore Tom Carlson is tied for 46th at 149 after rounds of 76 and 73. Gehrke is also tied for 46th at 149 (70-79). Senior Parker Pemberton played as an individual, shooting a 145 to tie for 14th (70-75).

The Lobos will continue the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational tomorrow with the final 18 holes. The rest of the Lobo squad is already in Japan preparing for next week’s Topy Cup that begins on Tuesday.
