ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico volleyball team (3-0) claimed the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic tournament title with a win over Loyola Marymount (2-1) in the third session Saturday night. Tournament MVP Gayle Tripp led the undefeated Lobos to victory along with all-tournament team members Jade Michaelsen, Jeanne Fairchild and Anna Lehne.
UNM handed Loyola Marymount their first loss of the season in three sets. In the first set Fairchild landed one of her match-high 16 kills to give the Lobos a 13-12 lead, which they would keep the remainder of the set, finishing 25-22.
In the second set, Rose Morris and Lehne attacked the ball with full force, for a combined nine kills, to win 25-16.
Michaelsen had a team-high 34 assists, 12 of which came in the third set, where UNM closed out the match 25-22.
Earlier in the evening, Central Arkansas defeated Idaho State in four sets, 25-12, 25-21, 24-26, 30-28, for third place.
UNM returns to action on Friday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. (MDT) against Rutgers in the George Mason Patriot Invitational. The trip to Fairfax, Va., begins a stretch of 12 matches on the road for the Lobos.
