There is a new way to get to University Stadium: take the bus. And if your ABQ RIDE to the Lobos’ home opener vs. TCU on Saturday includes a plan to chow down, then get ready to make a whole lot of new choices.
The menu at University Stadium is almost as “multiple” as the Lobos offense and Sodexo Sports and Leisure, the new concessionaire for Lobos athletics, has made it easier to get to the chow. The company has doubled the number of concession stands and added these delectables:
Philly cheese-steak sandwiches.
Hamburgers and cheeseburgers.
Chicken tenders.
Regular fries or garlic fries.
Fresh popped popcorn.
Three grilling stations featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages, foot-long hot dogs and brats.
Southwestern-style barbeque pork sandwiches.
UNM teaming up with the City of Albuquerque to provide shuttle service to all 2008 Lobos home games also gives fans a chance to get to the food quickly and easily. Special parking lots have been set up to drop off bus riders at the front door of the stadium. UNM will be working with the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) to make sure the buses find quick access in and out of the stadium.
“We have a great relationship with UNM, and have worked with them on many projects in the past,” said Mayor Martin Chávez, “This service builds on that relationship and allows for better access to the games, freeing up parking and reducing congestion on busy streets.”
“Sitting in traffic and trying to find a place to park is not a way to start an evening,” said UNM President Dr. David J. Schmidly. “We want to provide a great entertainment venue and a stress-free ride. This partnership between UNM and the City will help make that happen.”
Lobo fans wishing to skip the hassle of the come-and-go traffic need to go to Lot T at Lomas and University. A UNM representative will be selling round-trip shuttle tickets for $3. A season pass for UNM’s six home games cost $12. The bus service begins two hours before kickoff and continues until all fans have left the stadium. Additional information on the shuttle service can be found at the ABQ RIDE web-site at www.cabq.gov/abqride.
“We’ve had a terrific response from UNM with the student bus pass.” said Greg Payne, ABQ RIDE Director. “This new program allows us to introduce even more people to a vastly improved transit system, who hopefully will become regular riders in the future.”
