ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The National Football League enters the second week of preseason games this weekend. Numerous Lobos remain in the league and will be competing for an opportunity to make a roster or continue their NFL dreams. The following is an update on where the former Lobos are and when they play next.
LB Brian Urlacher (Chicago Bears) – Urlacher and the Bears are coming off a 24-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend. Urlacher had two tackles in the contest and remains one of the top linebackers in the NFL.
This week, the Bears will travel to Seattle and face the Seahawks on Saturday, August 16 at 9 p.m.
WR Hank Baskett (Philadelphia Eagles) – Baskett made two catches last week for 17 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Baskett had a long reception of nine yards in the first preseason game for the Eagles. The Steelers won the game by a score of 16-10.
This week, Baskett and the Eagles face the Panthers at home. The game is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 14 and will be broadcast on Fox Sports.
OT Ryan Cook (Minnesota Vikings) – In his third season with the Minnesota Vikings after a stellar career at New Mexico. Has been moved to tackle in the NFL and is one of four linemen to start all 16 games in 2007. Cook helped the Vikings rank first in the NFL in rushing and set a team record with 2,634 yards, only the 2nd time in team history leading the NFL in rushing.
Cook and the Vikings will take on Baltimore Saturday in their second preseason game. Cook will have an opportunity to play against former teammate WR Marcus Smith.
WR Marcus Smith (Baltimore Ravens) – Smith showcased some of his talents in the first preseason game of the year for the Ravens. Smith had two catches for 21 yards including a long play of 14 yards. The Ravens defeated New England, 16-15.
This week, Baltimore faces the Vikings Saturday, August 16 at 6:30 p.m.
LB Quincy Black (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) – Black is currently on the roster for Tampa Bay but did not record a tackle against Miami. Black was primarily a special teams player last year but will be vying for time at the linebacker position this fall.
The Buccaneers take on the Patriots Sunday, August 17 at 8 p.m. in Tampa Bay on the NFL Network.
Three former linemen are currently trying to make rosters this season including OG Devin Clark (Washington Redskins), OT Terrance Pennington (Atlanta Falcons) and OG Robert Turner (New York Jets).
The Redskins face the Jets in New York this Saturday, August 16 at 7 p.m. Clark and Turner will be on the same field for the first time since leaving New Mexico.
Pennington and the Falcons will play Saturday, August 16 when the Colts come to Atlanta. The game is set for a 7:30 start.
