Former University of New Mexico men’s golf All-American Tommy Armour III (1980-81) is set to compete in the 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Mich., this weekend. The 72-hole event is the PGA Tour’s final major of the year and runs from Aug. 7-10.
Armour III is having one of his best years on tour. The 48-year old has five top-10 finishes this season and is currently 42nd in the FedExCup point standings. He has already earned nearly $1.4 million in 2008, making 12 cuts in 17 events. He has also cracked the top-100 in the Official World Golf Ratings, ranking 99th as of this week. Armour’s current ranking and earnings are the best numbers he has put up on tour in the past five years.
This season, Armour III tied for second at the Travelers Championship and tied for third at the AT&T National. He also tied for sixth at the Puerto Rico Open, tied for seventh at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and tied for 10th at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Armour III is set to tee off on No. 10 on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 11:10 a.m. (M.D.T.) with Brendan Jones and Fredrik Jacobson. The same group tees off on No. 1 on Friday at 6:00 a.m. (M.D.T.).
