Players and coaches from the University of New Mexico, in partnership with the New Mexico Bowl, hosted NCAA Football Youth Day today in the UNM Football Indoor Practice Facility. In an effort to promote college football to those who desire to play the game, the clinic was free of charge to children under the age of 14. An amazing 277 boys and girls showed up to learn and sharpen their football skills. The one day camp was a open to all Young American Football League players as well as Albuquerque youth players eager to learn more about proper tackling, agility, passing, receiving and kicking.
UNM head football coach Rocky Long was on hand to offer some words of encouragement as well as some tutelage for the defensive players. Senior cornerback Glover Quin and tight end Mitch Straub also spoke to the campers about the importance of playing hard on the field and studying hard in the classroom.
“I think that this was really nice for the kids,” said Quin, “it was really great for the NCAA to have it here in Albuquerque, right here in our backyard. The kids had a lot of fun. The older you get football becomes more of a job. Right now it’s all about having fun and I think they did that today.”
