University of New Mexico women’s golfer Jodi Ewart won a four-hole sudden death playoff to successfully defend her title Thursday in the English Women’s Amateur Championship played at the Berkshire (England) Golf Club.

Ewart, a native of Yorkshire who will be a junior at UNM in 2008-09, defeated Liz Bennett after the two players were tied at 3-under 285 following 72 holes. Ewart shot 70-69-76-70.

In the playoff, Ewart and Bennett each made par at No. 1, 2 and 17 before coming to the par-4, 399-yard 18th. Ewart took the title by making par. Bennett could not get up and down to force an additional playoff.

“This is incredible, it’s got to be my best individual win,” said Ewart. “It was wonderful to win last year but the field is much better this year and so it’s more special.”

Ewart returns to Berkshire on Monday in an attempt to qualify for next week’s Ricoh Women’s British Open.
