England lost to Spain 6-1 today in the final round of the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship at the Stenungsunds Golf Club (par 72, 6,125 yards) in Sweden. England finished in fourth place. Host Sweden defeated the Netherlands in the championship match.
University of New Mexico golfer Jodi Ewart played against some familiar competition today.
Ewart and teammate Rachel Jennings lost their foursome match to Belen Mozo and Maria Hernandez on the 19th hole. Mozo attends the University of Southern California and was a member of the Trojans’ squad that won the 2008 NCAA Championship in Albuquerque in May. Hernandez competes for Purdue University.
Hernandez edged Ewart in singles, 2 and 1.
Ewart is the two-time defending Mountain West Conference individual champion. She was an honorable mention All-American by Golfweek in 2008 after being named a second team selection in 2007. The 2008 Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Year finished the 2007-08 season with a 74.41 scoring average.
Also in Scandinavia, Lobo Mikaela Backstedt is competing as an amateur in the Felix Finnish Open, a professional tour event in Finland. Backstedt, who will be a senior at UNM in 2008-09, is tied for 29th (out of 83 golfers) with a 36-hole total of 9-over 151. She shot a 4-over 76 in the second round.
Among the 26 amateurs competing, Backstedt has the fourth-lowest total. The final round is Sunday.
