University of New Mexico golfer Jodi Ewart has led England to the No. 1 seed heading into match play of the European Ladies’ Amateur Team Championship being played at the Stenungsunds Golf Club in Sweden.

A native of North Yorkshire, England, Ewart shot 66-69 on the first two days of competition. Her first-round 66 is the low round of the tournament so far.

England has a two-round total of 14-under-par, which is three shots better than Spain. England faces No. 8 seed Denmark Thursday in the quarterfinals of match play that runs through Saturday. Spain is the No. 2 seed and squares off against Scotland, the 7th seed.

The competition is comprised of 16 European countries and features a bevy of international players who attend universities in the United States. Spain is led by Azahara Munoz, who attends Arizona State and won the individual title at the 2008 NCAA Championships at the UNM Championship Course. Belem Mozo (Southern Cal) and Maria Hernandez (Purdue) also play for the Spanish team.

Ewart, who will be a junior at UNM this fall, is the two-time defending Mountain West Conference individual champion. She was an honorable mention All-American by Golfweek in 2008 after being named a second team selection in 2007. The 2008 Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Year finished the 2007-08 season with a 74.41 scoring average.
