The Mountain West Conference has announced its 2007-08 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients, and the University of New Mexico had the second-highest total among the nine member institutions. UNM had 82 student-athletes recognized from 18 different sports.

The sport-by-sport breakdown for UNM: baseball (5), women’s basketball (3), men’s cross country (1), women’s cross country (7), football (5), men’s golf (1), women’s golf (3), men’s tennis (1), women’s tennis (5), men’s track and field (5), women’s track and field (8), men’s skiing (7), women’s skiing (3), men’s soccer (7), women’s soccer (5), softball (1), women’s swimming and diving (11) and volleyball (4).

A total of 510 student-athletes were honored by the Conference, including 20 individuals who have achieved a 4.00 or higher cumulative grade point average over two or more terms. Among those 20 student-athletes with a 4.00 or higher, UNM had 11, more than any other school in the league. Additionally, 41 student-athletes were recognized in multiple sports, bringing the overall number of awards presented to 547.

The MWC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by the Conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
