Wake Forest golfer Nannette Hill tied the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course (par 72, 6,424 yards) women’s 18-hole record after shooting a 5-under par 67 Tuesday to highlight the first round of the NCAA Championships. Southern California carded a 4-under par as a team and leads UCLA and Auburn by five strokes. Hill controls a two-shot lead heading into the second round on Wednesday.
USC chipped in a 284 team score and was led by sophomore Belen Mozo. Mozo is currently tied for second after shooting a 3-under par 69. Senior Paola Moreno is tied for seventh individually at 2-under par 70.
UCLA and Auburn are tied for second place and are five shots behind the Trojans. The Bruins and Tigers shot 1-over par 289 in the opening round. Arizona State is fourth while Denver and Wake Forest are tied for fifth.
Three-time defending champion Duke currently sits in 18th place at 11-over par 299.
Hill carded five birdies during her flawless round. Five golfers are two-shots back at 3-under 69.
During the first round only 14 of the 126 golfers shot under par. Texas A&M sophomore Ashley Freeman who is tied for ninth made back-to-back eagles on the par five fifth and the par 4 sixth.
New Mexico senior Alexandra Phelps, playing as an individual, shot a career-best 3-under par 69.
