New Mexico Women’s Golf – NCAA Regional Release in PDF Format

The 20th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team has earned a spot in the 2008 NCAA East Regional, the NCAA Division I women’s golf committee announced this afternoon. Competition is May 8-10 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. This marks the 16th consecutive year New Mexico has qualified for postseason, or every year since regional play was introduced in 1993. The Lobos earned the automatic berth earlier this month by winning the Mountain West Conference Championship on its home course in Albuquerque. UNM sophomore Jodi Ewart took the MWC individual title for the second straight year.
The University of Georgia will serve as host for the East Regional. Live stats will be available at www.GolfStat.com.
The NCAA Women’s Golf Championships are divided into three regional sites and conclude with the finals being hosted by the University of New Mexico May 20-23 at the UNM Championship Course. Each regional site has 21 teams, with the top eight teams in each region advancing to the finals. New Mexico is the No. 8 seed in the East Regional. The other regional sites are Austin, Texas and Sacramento, Calif.
UNM finished 22nd at last year’s NCAA Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Joining the Lobos in next week’s East Regional are No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Florida, No. 8 Georgia, No. 10 Auburn, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 18 Tennessee, No. 21 Virginia, and Central Florida, Charleston Southern, East Carolina, Furman, Georgia State, Indiana, Jackson State, Jacksonville State, Louisville, Missouri, North Carolina-Wilmington, South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
The Lobos will take a young lineup to Athens: one senior (Alexandra Phelps), two juniors (Mikaela Backstedt and Morgan Grantham) and two sophomores (Ewart and Britney Choy) will represent UNM. Ewart is UNM’s top golfer with a scoring average of 74.23. She ranks No. 33 in the nation in the latest Golfweek poll.
