SANTA FE, N.M. – Senior Jermaine McQueen caught six passes for 138 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown, as the Cherry defeated the Silver team 35-7 in the University of New Mexico’s spring football game today at Santa Fe High School’s Ivan Head Stadium. The game capped New Mexico’s 2 ½ week spring practice season.
The Cherry team, consisting of mostly the first and second team offense and defense, piled up 387 yards on 59 plays, including 287 on 18-34 passing. The Cherry defense, meanwhile, limited the Silver to 109 yards, but gave up a late 77-yard Tate Smith to Bryant Williams touchdown pass.
Senior Rodney Ferguson had 58 yards and a score to lead all rushers, while junior Donovan Porterie passed for 96 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions on 10-18 passing.
Junior tight end Mitch Straub had a 3-yard touchdown grab, senior Paul Baker found the end zone on a 3-yard run and redshirt freshman Michael Scarlett had an acrobatic 19-yard catch to cap the Cherry scoring.
Junior lobo safety Clint McPeek led the Cherry defense with seven tackles, including a 6-yard sack. Senior linebacker Zach Arnett had six stops and senior defensive end Kevin Balogun had a pair of sacks.
Sophomore cornerback Jerome Jenkins led the Silver defense with a tackle for loss and two break-ups.
