The University New Mexico got balanced scoring to increase its lead to 14 shots after two rounds of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Women’s Golf Championships being played at the UNM Championship Course (par 73, 6,167 yards). The Lobos carded a 1-under 291 today for a 36-hole total of 589. BYU is second at 603. Live scoring of the event is available on www.Golfstat.com.
The final round gets underway Saturday at 8:30 a.m. New Mexico tees off between 10:10 and 10:50 a.m. The start of today’s round was delayed by 45 minutes due to frost.
New Mexico sophomore Britney Choy fired a 2-under 71 to take the individual lead at 145, or 1-under for the tournament. Lobo teammate Morgan Grantham is two shots back at 147 after shooting a career-low 71. UNM sophomore Jodi Ewart, the first round leader, and BYU’s Natalia Jimenez, are also at 147.
Ewart, the defending champion, shot a 2-over 75 on a scorecard that included a quadruple-bogey 9 on the par-5 fifth hole.
New Mexico has four golfers in the top seven going into Saturday’s final round. Junior Mikaela Backstedt is seventh at 152 while senior Alexandra Phelps sits at 155. Phelps rebounded from a first-round 81 with a 1-over 74 today.
On Saturday, the Lobos look to capture their 14th overall conference championship since 1982, and the fifth in nine seasons in Mountain West Conference play. New Mexico won MWC team titles from 2000-03.
