ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The New Mexico women’s golf team shot a 6-over par Thursday in the opening round of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships and leads the event by nine strokes. Sophomore Jodi Ewart carded a 1-under par 72 and currently leads the event. Ewart was the only golfer to shoot under par at the par 73, 6,167 yard UNM Championship Golf Course. The Lobos had four players finish in the top 10 individually after a cold and windy first round. Live scoring of the event is available on www.Golfstat.com.
Ewart, who is the defending MWC medalist, shot a 1-under par on the first nine and finished even on the back. The North Yorkshire, England native, had three birdies during her opening round.
Sophomore Britney Choy finished 1-over par 74 Thursday and is tied for third. Choy was 3-over par through the 14 holes and finished strong with two birdies in the final four holes.
Juniors Morgan Grantham and Mikaela Backstedt are tied for sixth after shooting a 3-over par 76. Backstedt had two birdies during the round, while Grantham had one on her first hole.
Senior Alexandra Phelps shot an 8-over par 81 and is tied for 21st.
BYU came in second after shooting 15-over par as a team. UNLV is third at 16-over and Wyoming is fourth at 27-over par. TCU and Colorado State were 32-over par and tied for fifth while San Diego State is seventh at 34-over.
New Mexico enters the second round with a nine shot lead over the MWC field. The championships are being held at the UNM Championship Golf Course for the first time in MWC history and the Lobos are trying to capture their first tournament title since 2003.
The second round is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. with the first group. UNM is set to tee off at 10:10 a.m. with Phelps. The remaining Lobos will go off in order every 10 minutes. For more information visit the MWC website at www.TheMWC.com.
