ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team, ranked No. 55, staged its second consecutive comeback in as many days with the 4-3 victory over No. 38 BYU. The Cougars swept doubles but the Lobos won four singles matches to improve to 14-7 overall and 6-1 in MWC play while BYU falls to 13-10 on the season and 5-2 in MWC action. UNM defeated BYU for only the fourth time in the all-time series history, bringing the Cougars’ lead to 24-4.
New Mexico was down 1-0 after falling on all three doubles courts but they refused to give up. Emma Hayman tied the dual by blowing past Dolly Chang 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. At No. 2, Kristina Doerr, nationally ranked No. 87, was too much for Mackenzie White winning 7-5, 6-2 and putting the Cougars ahead 2-1. Senior Lucy Scott defeated Chie Hayasaka 7-5, 6-1 to re-tie the dual.
Cougar freshman, Elle Carney put BYU ahead 3-2 after defeating Maria Sotirchos 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Ola Abou-Zekry, ranked No. 123, battled No. 65 Anastasia Surkova at the No. 1 spot. Abou-Zekry won the first set and Surkova sent it to a third set and took the first two games of the set. Abou-Zekry bounced back and won the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 tying the match once again. Shortly after senior Jennifer Ryba’s match finished its tiebreaker to decide the second set. Ryba won the tiebreaker 7-4 to win the match 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) giving New Mexico the upset.
The Lobos face another tough task when they square off with TCU, ranked nationally No. 24 with a 17-4 mark and a perfect 7-0 in MWC action. A Lobo victory would give them a tie with TCU for first place in the last match the regular season. Before the match, UNM sends off two seniors who will be playing their final match at the Lobo Tennis Club tomorrow at 11 a.m.
