LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team’s MWC undefeated record was broken by UNLV, ranked No. 58. The Rebels beat the Lobos 7-0 in Las Vegas, Nev., on Saturday. The Lobos fall to 12-7 (4-1 MWC) while the Rebels improve to 10-8 (2-2 MWC).
The Lobos lost the doubles point when No. 48 Elena Gantcheva and Kristina Nedeltcheva beat Ola Abou-Zekry and Lucy Scott 8-6, on the No. 1 court. Alisa Razina and Sharon Marin defeated Emma Hayman and Victoria Tessmar 8-4 at No. 3. The Lobos avoided the sweep in doubles when Mackenzie White and Jennifer Ryba won their match 9-7 against Anna Maskaljun and Katy Williams.
In singles, four matches needed three sets to decide the winner. Ryba won her first set 6-4 but Williams returned with 6-3 and 6-0 sets for the match. Scott went ahead with a 6-3 first set before Nikol Dimitrova took the match with 6-2 and 7-5 sets.
Abou-Zekry, ranked No. 123, also won her first set against No. 35 Gantcheva but the Rebel came back to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. White lost a tough tiebreaker in the first set and Nedeltcheva slid by the Lobo junior in the third set winning 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Hayman fell 7-5, 6-1 to Maskaljun at the No. 4 spot. On the No. 6 court, Maria Sotirchos dropped her first match of the spring, 6-3, 6-3 to Adrienn Hidvegi.
The Lobos return home to finish out the regular season against Utah on April 11, BYU on April 12 and TCU on Senior Day on April 13.
