ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team needed only one set more than the minimum to beat the Air Force Falcons, 7-0, on Saturday. The Lobos are now 2-0 in MWC play and 15-6 overall.
In doubles, Graeme Kassautzki and Joe Wood made quick work of Mike Gies and Harrison Maloy with an 8-0 win. Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby gave the Lobos a 1-0 advantage with an 8-2 victory over Austin Francis and Alex Beaussart at the No. 2 spot. Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski finished the sweep by beating Brett Rodgers and Taylor Soster 8-3 to improve to 22-5.
In singles, Bugby played at No. 4 and delivered a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory over Johnny Buckingham. Johnny Parkes scored a 6-0, 6-1 win against Francis on the No. 2 court. Then, No. 41 Jones gave the Lobos the dual with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on the No. 1 court against Rodgers.
Pajkowski played at No. 4 for only the second time this season and won his first improving to 1-1 (14-9 overall) with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Beaussart. Kassautzki trailed 2-0 to Soster in the second set but Kassauatzki took the match 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3. Derek Lynch won his first set on the No. 6 court but Gies won the second set to send the match into a third set super tiebreaker. Gies collected the first points but Lynch took over to win 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
The Lobos host their final home match on Sunday for Senior Day when they battle San Diego State at 1:30 p.m. The Aztecs defeated Air Force, 7-0, on Friday and lost to Utah, 5-2, on Saturday for a 12-7 overall mark and 1-1 in MWC play.
