BOZEMAN, Mont. — Malin Hemmingsson picked up her second career All-America honor by placing seventh today in the women’s giant slalom at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Hemmingsson, a sophomore from Ostersund, Sweden, finished the two runs with a combined time of 1:47.23. It is her first All-America honor in the giant slalom.
The Lobos moved up to seventh place in the team standings with 199 points, despite an nagging injury that did not allow Tor Fodnesbergene to finish the day. UNM ranks fourth among West Region teams in the overall standings.
Junior Karin Ohlin recorded her career-best NCAA finish in the giant slalom with a 12th place finish.
Freshmen Thomas Schwab and Christoffer Norell placed 13th and 27th, respectively, in the men’s giant slalom at their first NCAA national competition. Fodnesbergene, a junior from Fagernes, Norway, has been bothered by an ankle injury all week and did not start his second run.
“Malin and Karin skied very well,” said Lobo head coach Fredrik Landstedt. “Karin had one of her best GS finishes. Thomas had a great second run to jump up to 13th. Tor’s injury hurts us in the team standings, but we are hoping that he will be able to go in Saturday’s slalom race.”
Competition continues on Friday with the men’s and women’s Nordic classical races at Bohart Ranch.
