AUSTIN, Texas — The 22nd-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team leads the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational after shooting a 15-over par 303 in the opening round. The Lobos lead Florida by two shots heading into the second round Tuesday at the par 72, 6,344 yard University of Texas Golf Club. Senior Alexandra Phelps is currently in second place after carding a 1-over 73.
Phelps enters the second round only a shot behind Florida’s Ornella Jouven for the lead. The Albuquerque native is one of three Lobos in the top 10 individually.
Sophomore Britney Choy is tied for fifth after shooting a 3-over 75. The Longhorn Invitational is her third tournament this spring after sitting out the fall due to injury.
Junior Mikaela Backstedt shot a 76 and is tied for seventh. Sophomore Jodi Ewart chipped in with a 79 and is currently tied for 24th. Junior Morgan Grantham is tied for 66th after an 84.
