ORLANDO, Fla. — New Mexico senior golfer Alexandra Phelps shot a 1-under par 71 Sunday in the opening round of the UCF Challenge and is currently tied for 16th. Phelps recorded four birdies during the opening round to highlight the Lobos at the par 72, 6,356 yard Red Tail Golf Course. UNM shot 7-over par and is tied for 15th as a team. Southern California leads the event at 7-under par.
Phelps tied her season low score for 18 holes with a 1-under par 71 Sunday and was a shot shy of tying her career low.
Sophomore Jodi Ewart carded a 1-over par 73 in the opening round and is tied for 34th individually. Ewart opened the tournament shooting 1-under par on the back nine and finished with a 2-over par on the front. During the round, Ewart recorded two birdies.
Junior Morgan Grantham shot a 73 and tied her career low set last week at the Wildcat Invitational. Grantham is 1-over par during the tournament and tied with Ewart for 34th.
Sophomore Britney Choy fired a 6-over par 78 and is tied for 76th. Junior Mikaela Backstedt is tied at 80th at 7-over par.
USC leads the 18-team field and has a one shot lead over Duke. Pepperdine is third at 3-under par.
Duke’s Alison Whitaker is the individual leader at 7-under par, while Auburn’s Cydney Clanton is second at 6-under par.
