ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico sophomore Jodi Ewart has been selected as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland Curtis Cup Team. Ewart, who is currently ranked 18th nationally, becomes the first Lobo to play in the event since Caroline Keggi competed in 1988. Ewart is one of eight elite players honored who will play The Old Course, St Andrews from Friday, May 30 – Sunday, June 1.
“This is a big news!” said UNM head coach Jill Trujillo. “What an honor for Jodi to be chosen for this prestigious amateur event.”
The tournament will be a three-day format and will feature three foursomes and three four-ball matches on the first two days. All eight players will play singles matches on Sunday to conclude the competition.
Ewart is the third Lobo to ever compete in the event and has already made her mark on the UNM record books. The North Yorkshire, England native, set a new school record with a 73.35 scoring average as a freshman and was named Co-Mountain West Player of the Year. Ewart captured the MWC Individual title and earned Freshman of the Year last year. Other accomplishments included the 2007 English Stroke play champion and while back in the UK, she was a third qualifier in the 2007 Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championships. In 2006, she won the English Northern Ladies Championship and the Daily Telegraph Girls Championship in Dubai.
The Curtis Cup was donated by the sisters Harriet and Margaret Curtis in 1927 and is inscribed “to stimulate friendly rivalry among the women golfers of many lands.” However, largely due to financial reasons, the first official match was not played until 1932 at Wentworth where the US beat Great Britain and Ireland 5 1/2 – 3 1/2.
The USA team has won the last five Curtis Cup Matches and leads the series by 25 wins to 6 wins for Great Britain and Ireland. Only three matches in the history of the event had finished in a draw.
