ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team, 5-4, will play two matches this weekend in Kansas. First, they face the No. 67 Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday, in Manhattan. Then, they head east to Lawrence to face the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday. Both matches start at 10 a.m. (MST).
The Lobos made a big jump from No. 64 to No. 46 in the national rankings this week.
The Wildcats stroll in at No. 67 with a 4-3 mark. They began the season with four victories but have fallen in the three matches since. Most recently, KSU lost to Utah and BYU on consecutive days on the road. The Lobos lead the Wildcats 7-2 in the series. New Mexico and Kansas State split the two previous matches in Manhattan. Kansas State and Kansas square off on Wednesday before each face the Lobos.
The Jayhawks ride in with a 3-5 record after also falling to BYU in their most recent action before Wednesday’s match against the Wildcats. Kansas has alternated between wins and losses in their last four matches. New Mexico trails the Jayhawks 3-4 but the Lobos have won the last two matches in the history between the two programs. The last time Kansas won was at the NCAA Regional Championships (May 5, 2008).
Up next, New Mexico heads to Honolulu to face Hawai’i (March 17), Nevada (March 18) and San Diego (March 20).
