Tony White Named Linebackers Coach at New Mexico
Feb. 26, 2008
University of New Mexico head football coach Rocky Long announced today that Tony White has been named linebackers coach. White, 28, comes to UNM after spending the 2007 season at UCLA, working as a graduate assistant in football operations.
White’s duties at UCLA included assisting with day-to-day operations and administration, recruiting administration, and providing professional football scouts with player information and videos.
White was recruited to UCLA by Long when Long was the defensive coordinator with the Bruins.
“Tony will be a really good fit for our program,” said Long. “I’ve know Tony for a long time and we’re thrilled that he is joining the Lobo football staff.”
White was a three-year starter (1998-2000) and four-year letterman at outside linebacker for UCLA. As a senior in 2000, he started all 12 games and ranked sixth on the team with 64 tackles. He was awarded the N.N. Sugarman Award for Best Leadership and was also a team captain. He made 53 tackles as a junior, starting eight of nine games. As a sophomore, he started all 12 games and was the team’s third-leading tackler (69).
White spent four years playing for three teams in the Canadian Football League. In 2002, he was a member of the Calgary Stampeders. He then spent two and one-half years playing for the Ottawa Renegades and finished his career with the Hamilton Tiger-cats in 2005.
In 2006, White served as the head football coach at St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City, Calif., where he led the team to its best league record since 1993 and coached two first team All-CIF performers. He also served as the athletics director at Discovery Prep Charter School.
White graduated from UCLA in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in History. He also has received credits from UCLA towards a master’s degree in Education. White was born March 22, 1979, in Key West, Fla.
