The No. 35 LSU Tigers women’s tennis team bounced 62nd-ranked New Mexico 6-1 this afternoon at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium in Baton Rouge. The Tigers improve to 4-2 on the season, while UNM falls to 3-3.

The Lobos’ lone win came from Sandra Zmak at No. 3 singles. Zmak, the Lobos’ highest ranked player at No. 85, dispatched Tiffany Tucker in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.

LSU won the doubles point by taking all three matches. The Tigers claimed singles wins at No. 1 and No. 2 in straight sets, then clinched the match when Staten Spencer beat UNM’s Jennifer Ryba 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.

The Lobos nearly got a win from Emma Hayman at No. 5 singles, but LSU’s Hannah Robinson rallied for a three-set win, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-8.

Due to inclement weather, the Lobos were unable to practice on Friday. UNM’s first action at the LSU facility came during warm-ups before today’s match.

“We’re not making any excuses, but it would have been nice to get a practice in on Friday,” said UNM head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz.

New Mexico remains in Baton Rouge where it will face Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday at 10 a.m. MST. UNM’s next home match is Friday, Feb. 29, when it entertains Boise State at 5 p.m. at the Lobo Tennis Club.
