University of New Mexico skiers Malin Hemmingsson and Thomas Schwab were named Alpine Skiers of the Week by the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association for their performances over the week at the UNM Invitational.
Hemmingsson, a sophomore from Ostersund, Sweden, finished fourth in both the women’s slalom and giant slalom at the Lobos home meet on Feb. 8 and 9. The finishes gave her six top-10 placings on the season.
Schwab, a freshman from Groebming, Austria, placed fifth in the men’s slalom and ninth in the men’s giant slalom at the Taos Ski Valley event. For Schwab, a newcomer to the Lobo squad in January, the fifth-place finish in the slalom was the best of the season.
The Lobos are off this weekend as they prepare for the 2008 NCAA Western Regionals on Feb. 22-23 in Bridger Bowl (Nordic) and Bohart Ranch (Alpine), Mont. This will also be the site of the NCAA Championships on March 5-8.
