TAOS / RED RIVER, N.M. — The University of Denver pulled ahead of the University of Colorado on Saturday to win the 2008 University of New Mexico Ski Invitational. The Pioneers edged the Buffs, 591-587.5 for the team title. New Mexico finished third overall, its best team finish of the season, with 481.5 points.
Denver took second, third and fourth in the men’s slalom on Saturday for 84 points from John Buchar, Seppi Stiegler, and Francesco Ghedina. Tague Thorson of Utah won the race. New Mexico’s Thomas Schwab placed fifth, followed by Christoffer Norell in eighth and Olivier Lacaille in 15th.
Colorado took the women’s slalom team title with 81 points behind the first-place finish of Lucie Zikova, Rachel Roosevelt’s fifth-place finish, and Lisa Perricone in sixth. UNM’s Malin Hemmingsson finished fourth, her sixth top-10 finish of the season. Karin Ohlin placed 11th, while Lene Kaasa finished 35th for the Lobos.
Maria Grevsgaard’s winning streak of seven races this season came to an end today as Denver’s Annelise Bailly edged out the CU Buff in the women’s 5K skate. Polina Ermoshina of UNM picked up her sixth top-10 finish of the season with seventh. Other scorers for the Lobos, Crystin Jaques placed 18th, followed by Melanie Zemp in 19th.
CU’s Kit Richmond won the men’s 5K skate. Lobo Casey Dyck recorded a career-best finish in eighth place. Simon Reissmann finished 14th for the Lobos, while Martin Kaas recorded a career-best finish of 18th.
The next collegiate competition for UNM and the rest of the RMISA members is the NCAA Regionals, hosted by Montana State, in Bridger Bowl, Mont., on Feb. 22-23.

* Denver won with 591 points, the seventh most since the current scoring format was adopted for the 2000 season. Colorado claimed runner-up honors with 587.5 points, the highest-ever by a runner-up team and the ninth most on the list.
* The 3.5-point winning margin by the Pioneers was the third closest over the nine seasons with this format, with all three victories by Denver over Colorado; in the very first meet with the current formula, DU won by one in the 2000 Utah Invitational, and in the 2006 Montana State Invitational, Denver edged the Buffs by 1.5 points.

Casey Dyck, Jr.- career-best finish in freestyle (8th), previous best of 12th, last time at 2007 NCAA Regional.
Rick Grahn, Jr. – career-best finish in freestyle (29th), after tying previous career-best (30th) at Western State last week.
