TAOS, N.M. — The Lobo ski team is in third place at the University of New Mexico Invitational with 248 points after the first day of competition. Colorado leads the meet through four events with 304.5 points, just ahead of Denver with 291.

Colorado scored over 80 points in three events, winning the women’s giant slalom and women’s 5K classic. Katie Hartman won the women’s giant slalom, followed by Lucie Zikova in second and Lisa Perricone in a tie for fourth with UNM’s Malin Hemmingsson. Karin Ohlin finished 17th and Lene Kaasa finished 34th in her last home meet as a Lobo.

Maria Grevsgaard continued her dominance of the women’s Nordic races in 2008 with her seventh win of the season. She was one of three Buffs to finish in the top six of the women’s 5K classic. The Lobo women finished second as a team behind CU with the second-place finish of Polina Ermoshina. Melanie Zemp finished 15th, followed by Crystin Jaques in 18th.

The Buffs picked up 81 points in the men’s 10K classic by alternating finishes with Denver through the first six racers. DU’s John Stene won the race, followed by CU’s Kit Richmond. The Pioneers took third and fifth, while the Buffs took fourth and sixth. The Simon Reissmann was the top finisher for the Lobos in ninth. Martin Kaas placed 17th and Casey Dyck finished 21st for UNM.

Nevada won the men’s giant slalom behind the first-place finish of Shane Collins and Cameron Barnes in fifth. New Mexico finished second in the event with three top-10 finishes, led by Tor Fodnesbergene in a tie for third. Christoffer Norell finished eighth, followed by Thomas Schwab in ninth.

Competition at Taos Ski Valley and Enchanted Forest Nordic Center in Red River continues tomorrow with the men’s and women’s slalom and freestyle skate races.
