ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team faced a tough Northwestern team, the No. 7 ranked team in the nation. The Wildcats swept the Lobos 7-0 on Saturday.

Senior Lucy Scott battled No. 68 Lauren Lui forcing her to a third set. Lui won the first set 6-1 and went ahead 5-2 in the second. Scott won four straight points to send the set to a tiebreaker. In the second set’s tiebreaker Scott won 7-4 sending the match to a 10-point tiebreaker third set. Lui won the first nine points and won the set 10-1 to win the match 6-1, 7-6 (7-4), (10-1) giving Northwestern their 7th point. Scott was the only Lobo to take a set off the Wildcats.

Junior Mackenzie White had a 4-0 lead in the first set but Georgia Rose, ranked No. 9 in the nation, won 10 straight points for a 4-0 lead in the second set before White was able to gain another point. Rose won the match 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.

Jennifer Ryba and Victoria Tessmar were fighting to win their match against Alexis Conill and Maria Mosolova. The Lobos pair was down 6-4 and looked as though they could catch up but the Wildcats proved too much winning 8-5 at the No. 3 spot of the line-up. Northwestern won all three doubles matches.

The Lobos fall to 1-2 with a road trip to play in state rival New Mexico State next weekend (Feb. 3) at noon.

Northwestern improves to 2-0 after sweeping both opponents they have faced so far this season. The Wildcats prepare to take on No. 1 Georgia Tech on Feb. 1st.
