ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team improved to 1-1 on the season after defeating No. 38 Colorado 4-3 on Saturday.
The Lobos lost all three doubles matches but came back to win 4 out of 6 singles matches. With the score tied 3-3 the pressure was put on the shoulders of freshman Emma Hayman to win the match. Hayman fought to win the first set but could not hold back Gleisy Torres-Torres in the second set. Hayman battled through the third set to win 6-3 to win the match 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 and give the victory to the Lobos.
After the match, Hayman said, “That was huge. It was good having the whole team cheering me on, they gave me the energy I needed.”
Junior Mackenzie White beat Melisa Esposito 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot to improve her record 1-1 in the spring and 7-4 overall. At the No. 4 spot, Lucy Scott got a win in her first match against Franzi Jendrian 6-2, 6-0. She is now 8-7 overall. The other Lobo’s point came when Jennifer Ryba used a tiebreaker to beat Veri Nurmi 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at the No. 6 spot.
Head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said, “This is absolutely a HUGE win for us! It feels good to just have beaten a top-40 team after we failed to do so last season.”
The Lobos will take a break to play an exhibition against Monterrey Tech on Wednesday. Then they face their toughest challenge yet when they host #7 Northwestern on Saturday.
