PARK CITY/SOLDIER HOLLOW, Utah — New Mexico junior Tor Fodnesbergene picked up his sixth career alpine win today in the men’s slalom at the Utah Invitational at the Park City Mountain Resort. The two-time NCAA All-American holds the UNM career record for wins in the slalom with four and tied the alpine wins record at six with Stefan Lanzier and Lars Loseth.
“Today was definitely a better day than yesterday,” said Lobo Alpine head coach Martin Kroisleitner. “We ended up with five Top 20 finishes in the Alpine races, led by Tor’s first-place finish.”
Fodnesbergene took won the race with a combined time of 1:41.92. Freshmen Thomas Schwab and Christoffer Norell placed tied for 10th and 16th, respectively, to give the men’s alpine team 66.5 points. Both finishes were season highs for the newcomers.
Sophomore Malin Hemmingsson led the women’s alpine squad with a seventh-place finish in 2:05.39. Junior Karin Ohlin took 12th place after starting off in 48th. Senior Amy Beresford was the third point-scorer for the Lobos in 29th, followed closely by Lene Kaasa in 30th.
The Alpine team’s 121.5 points, plus the 97 points contributed by the Nordic squad, moved the Lobos up to sixth place in the final standings with 391.5 points.
“Simon Reissmann had a very good race today,” said Lobo head coach Fredrik Landstedt. “He was with the leaders for most of the race, including first place for part of the first lap.”
Reissmann, a freshman, finished seventh in the men’s 15km freestyle race with a time of 28:03.7. Sophomore Tor-Hakon Hellebostad finished 13th, while junior Rick Grahn picked up points in 31st place. Casey Dyck followed close behind in 33rd.
For the women, Polina Ermoshina finished 13th in the women’s 10km freestyle with a time of 16:43.5. Melanie Zemp and Crystin Jaques earned points for the Lobos, finishing in 24th and 27th place, respectively.
The Nordic Lobos will travel to Winter Park, Colo., Jan. 19-20, to finish the Colorado Invitational. The Alpine Lobos have the team in third place going into this weekend’s races. The Alpine squad will have the weekend off from competition.
