STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — The New Mexico ski team got the collegiate season underway today with giant slalom races at the University of Colorado/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial Invitational. The Lobos are currently tied for third place overall with 128 points going into Sunday night’s slalom competition.

Freshman Christoffer Norell took second place in the men’s race, while sophomore Malin Hemmingsson took second in the women’s race.

The Lobo men took third place as a team with 72 points, including three top 10 finishes. In addition to the second-place finish by Norell, freshman Thomas Schwab and junior Tor Fodnesbergene placed ninth and tenth, respectively. Schwab is a newcomer from Austria who joined the team during the semester break and is expected to make the Lobos stronger in men’s alpine. Sophomore Jon Masdal missed the race with a back injury.

The Lobo women took fourth place as a team with 56 points. After Hemmingsson, senior Amy Beresford was the next Lobo finisher in 20th place. Senior Lene Kaasa and sophomore Jessica Dakers finished 31st and 32nd, respectively.
