ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Dionne Marsh scored a season-high 21 points for New Mexico, as the Lobos rolled over Norfolk State University, 83-36, Friday night at The Pit. Sophomore Amy Beggin added 11points and a team-high seven assists for the Lobos.
Marsh, a senior forward from Flower Mound, Texas, was 5 of 9 from the field, 11 of 13 from the free throw line, and added a game-high nine rebounds in 25 minutes of action. The 11 free throws made were a season-high for Marsh.
Beggin was 4 of 9 from the field, including 2 of 3 from the three-point arc in 26 minutes of play. Beggin’s seven assists were one shy of her career-best eight, which she had versus Dayton earlier this year. She came into the game with a 4.13 assist-turnover ratio, currently ranked third in the nation.
After an early 11-8 Spartans lead, the Lobos went on a 27-10 run to end the first half, starting off with a Beggin three that tied the score at 11. The Spartans didn’t hold a lead for the rest of the game. Marsh was the leader of the run, scoring 17 first-half points. The Lobos owned a 35-21 halftime lead.
The Lobos opened the second half with a 13-0 run to the 14:10 mark and pulled ahead to a 48-21 lead. The Lobos shot an impressive 58.3 percent from the three-point arc for the game. The 45-point win over the Spartans was the Lobos largest margin of victory of the year. Every Lobo contributed to the 83-36 win.
New Mexico, now 6-2 on the season, will play Towson in the championship game of the Comcast Lobo Shootout tomorrow, 7 p.m., at The Pit. Norfolk State, now 1-4 on the season, will play Southern, 5 p.m., at The Pit. The championship game will be available through All-Access on GoLobos.com and can be heard on 610 AM The Sports Animal.
