KISSIMMEE, Fla. – New Mexico women’s golf was defeated by Georgia, 2-2-1, in the opening round of the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship for Women at the Ginn Reunion Resort in Kissimmee, Fla. The Lobos are seeded 11th and matched up with the sixth-seeded Bulldogs in the first round. In the tournament, the higher seeds won 5 of 8 matches. UNM moved into the consolation bracket against South Carolina who is the 14th seed. The second round of action was suspended due to darkness and will be finished Monday morning.
UNM got wins from senior Giselle Claux and sophomore Jodi Ewart. Claux defeated Krystle Caithness by two, while Ewart downed Alina Lee by a hole. Lobo senior Alexandra Phelps and Innapha Tantanavivat from Georgia were all square at the end of the round. Juniors Mikaela Backstedt and Morgan Grantham were beat 3 and 2 by Garrett Phillips and Carolina Andrade respectively.
The first round results are as follows: The Blue Devils, who defeated TCU 4-1-0, will face Oklahoma State who defeated Denver 3-2-0. The No. 2 seed and local favorite Florida Lady Gators swept Louisville, 5-0-0 and will face Alabama in a SEC match up. Bama defeated Vanderbilt 4-1-0. No. 3 seed Auburn beat South Carolina 4-0-1 and in another SEC confrontation will face off against the #6 Georgia Bulldogs who snuck by New Mexico in a tiebreaker. In the biggest upset of the morning, #4 Purdue was ousted by Texas A&M, 3-2-0. Purdue is matched against Michigan State in a Big Ten pairing after Michigan State lost to Tennessee also in a tiebreaker. Tennessee and A&M will play against each other in the last winner’s bracket match.
