Head Coach Rocky Long
(on UNLV in general):
Listen to Coach Long’s Press Conference
“They have a lot of good athletes running around. If they’re on their game they can beat anybody in our league as was evident in their 27-0 beating of Utah. They’ve had struggles at times with turnovers that have prevented them from winning some close games. It’s a team that can beat us if they’re on top of their game.”
(on the success of New Mexico’s walk-on athletes):
“I think they’re the soul of our football team. They come out to play football because they love to play football, not for any other reason. A lot of them are in our program because I think we treat them better than a lot of walk-ons are treated at most programs. A lot of walk-ons have excelled because they have been given a chance to or they’ve matured or they’ve developed skills that they didn’t have coming out of high school. They got bigger and stronger, which they weren’t in high school, so they were given an opportunity and have been a vital part of our football team.”
(on the Lobos’ bowl picture):
“If TCU doesn’t win, there’s no question. But if TCU does win and we win I think that there’s a lot of political things going on behind closed doors that will still be going on, and we still won’t find out until the beginning of next week or even maybe the middle of next week. I think there’s a lot of discussions about all bowl games right now. I think if we win and TCU wins there’s going to be a lot of phone calls and a lot of discussions before any decisions are made. Win or lose, we deserve to play in a bowl game. We have no preference where we play. We’ll go anywhere and play anybody. No matter what time of the month, what time of the day it is, we’d love to play anybody at any bowl game.”
(on the Lobos possibly having an eight-win season):
“I think if we win eight games it’s a huge accomplishment – not to downplay the fact that our goal is to win the conference championship and we have not done that. There’s only nine teams in the last 42 years that have won seven or more games and four of them have been since I’ve been the head coach. I think that says a whole heck of a lot more than anything else.”
Senior LB George Carter
(on UNLV’s offense):
Listen to Carter’s Press Conference
“They have a very physical running back (Frank Summers). He is 5-11, about 240 pounds and he runs downhill. We are going to have to prevent him from getting downhill and make him run sideways. That is going to be the key to the game. We just have to stop the run and then everything else could fall into place after that. They have good skill position guys and a good quarterback who is mobile. Their offensive line is big and physical up front. It is going to have to be on us, the guys upfront – the defensive line and linebackers, to match their physicality up front.”
Junior TE Chris Mark
Listen to Mark’s Press Conference
(on the players’ thoughts entering the game):
“We know we have to win this one to move on to the 13th game, to get that bowl game. Everybody is treating this game almost like we did going up against Arizona. We have to go in there and do what we do, don’t worry about what they do, and just execute.”
