LAS VEGAS, Nev. — New Mexico women’s golf is in ninth place at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown after the opening round held today at the par 72, 6,050 yard Angel Park Mountain Golf Course. The Lobos were 10-over par in the round and 16 shots back of Tennessee for the tournament lead. Senior Alexandra Phelps led the Lobos after shooting a 1-under par 71 and is tied for seventh individually.
Phelps carded her best round of the fall Monday and is only four shots back of Denver’s Katie Kempter and Marci Turner from Tennessee for the individual lead.
Sophomore Jodi Ewart is tied for 41st after shooting a 3-over par 75 in the first round. Ewart, who has led UNM through the first three tournaments, is currently ranked 15th nationally by www.Golfstat.com. Juniors Mikaela Backstedt and Morgan Grantham are 4-over par and tied for 51st. Backstedt and Grantham both fired rounds of 76 on the opening day. Junior Py Bengtsson rounds out the Lobos lineup tied for 74th after carding a 7-over par 79.
Senior Giselle Claux played unattached and shot a 6-over par 78 Monday and is tied for 65th.
