ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico women’s tennis went ten for ten in the first two rounds of singles at the UNM Individual Invitational. Senior Jennifer Ryba, juniors Mackenzie White and Maria Sotirchos along with freshmen Emma Hayman and Victoria Tessmar all won two singles matches on Friday.
Ryba outlasted NMSU’s Stephanie Eusebe (6-2, 2-6, 7-6(4)) in the first round and then won against Tori Almagno from Colorado (6-4, 6-1) in the quarterfinals. She will meet teammate Hayman in the semifinals on Saturday.
Hayman beat NAU’s Edit Suhadja (7-5, 6-3) in the first round and then Laura Baum from Boise State (1-6, 6-3, 6-2) in the second match of the day. The winner of the match between Ryba and Hayman have the opportunity to meet up with White who also in flight A.
White beat NAU’s Leslie Vial (6-4, 6-1) and Colorado’s Christiane Pheil (6-2, 6-0) on Friday. White will have to go through Boise State’s Stacey Housley en route to the Championship.
Sotirchos handled Air Force’s Katrina Eromin (6-1, 6-0) and then defeated NMSU’s Bianca Discordia (6-3, 6-2).
Tessmar played in two separate flights. She started the day with a flight C match against Sammy Sarkis from Air Force and won 6-3, 6-2. Tessmar had a first round bye in flight B but drew Yumi Hasegawa from Northern Arizona for her second win (7-5, 6-1).
Saturday begins with the final two rounds of doubles and then the semifinal round of singles will finish the day.
