TULSA, OKLA. — University of New Mexico women’s tennis junior Ola Abou-Zekry won her first singles match of the fall season on Thursday. She defeated Lauren Wilson (6-1, 6-2) in the first round of the main draw at the ITA Regional Tournament.
Sandra Zmak and Lucy Scott paired up for doubles in the main draw and automatically advanced to the round of 32 because of their regional ranking (6). The Lobos opened with a match against Denver’s Annette Aksdal and Bhavani Tirumurti and won 8-2 to advance to the round of 16.
In singles, both Zmak and Scott lost their first match in the main draw to fall into the consolation bracket. Zmak lost to Yawna Allen from Oklahoma State (6-3, 4-6, 6-2) in three sets.
Senior Scott has played in the Regional three of her four years and she has advanced to the main draw each of those three opportunities. Scott had to win two matches in the qualifying draw to enter the main draw. Her third match of the tournament pitted her against Denver’s Ute Schnoy. Schnoy won the match 7-5, 6-2 sending Scott to the consolation round.
The Lobos will continue play on Friday in Tulsa, Okla.
