Head Coach Rocky Long
Watch Coach Long’s Press Conference
Listen to Coach Long’s Press Conference
(on San Diego State):
“I think San Diego State is very talented. They have an excellent quarterback. They’ve got big, good wide receivers. They’re one of those teams that once they get hot they can beat you by 30. They can beat anybody in our league by 30 if they got hot. When you see them go on the road in preseason and go to places like Michigan and lose by a touchdown, and they go to Ohio State and lose by 11 two years ago, that just shows you the talent level they have. When they play really well they can beat anybody in our conference for sure.”
(on Lobo K John Sullivan):
“I said this preseason I thought the toughest position on our team to replace was our field goal kicker because Kenny Byrd had a great career here. After the first week of the season and after the first game everybody thought, maybe even me, that we were really going to miss him more than originally anticipated. But now that Sullivan has done such a great job since that first game, we have great confidence that if we get that ball where he can kick a 50-yarder on in, we think he is going to make it and that really helps your team.”
(on sophomore Lobo safeties Ian Clark and Clint McPeek):
“I think we have some young safeties that are starting to make some plays and Ian (Clark) did on Saturday. They’re very athletic guys. Ian’s a very athletic guy who runs well and is big and strong for a safety. Potentially they’re going to be big time safeties. Clint McPeek has had a great season too if you consider that (like Ian Clark) they haven’t played before and they’re in a key position in our defense. But they’re just scratching the surface. Two years from now, a game like Ian had (at Wyoming) and everyone will just say `Oh that’s an average game for Ian.'”
(on certain games on the schedule being ones UNM should win):
“I don’t think there is a team left on our schedule that we should beat. There was one team on our schedule that we should beat and that was Sacramento State. Everybody else we play is as good as we are or better than we are. So I don’t look at it at all that way.”
Senior K John Sullivan
Listen to Sullivan’s Press Conference
(on what was responsible for his turnaround after missing two field goals in the season opener):
“Confidence. I think that’s the biggest thing for me. I just got a new confidence factor. I just believe in myself and know my coach believes in me. That was big.”
Sophomore Lobo Ian Clark
Listen to Clark’s Press Conference
(on the challenge of going to San Diego State):
“I think we have to get used to going up against a running quarterback, somebody as mobile as San Diego State’s quarterback is. I haven’t had a chance to watch the film yet. I get to play the tape today and be able to see what we need to work on and what I personally can do to help the team win the game.”
