The University of New Mexico men’s golf team finished tied for ninth at the conclusion of the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern University today. The Lobos posted a final score of 872, 20-over par (288-287-297) at the par-71 Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. Junior John Sauer led the way for UNM the whole tournament shooting an even-par 71 for the last 18 holes.
Sauer finished 3-under for the tournament with a three-round total of 210 (70-69-71), three strokes under par and tied for fifth overall. It is the lowest 54-hole total by a Lobo in four tournaments this season. He birdied two of his last three holes today.
Northwestern won the event with a three-round total of 848 (285-284-279, -4). Marquette’s Mike Van Sickle (70-70-66) and Minnesota’s Clayton Rask (75-66-65) tied for medalist honors with a 7-under total of 206.
Senior Robb Bierbaum tied for 31st overall, posting a 6-over 219 (72-73-74) while sophomore Kyle Nielsen tied for 40th at 9-over (76-72-74=222). Junior Steve Saunders finished with a 224 total (72-73-79=224) in a tie for 48th. Sophomore Brandon Putnam tied for 64th at 18-over (74-79-78=231).
The Lobos next travel to the Club Glove Invitational hosted by Pepperdine at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif., on Oct. 22-23.
