The University of New Mexico women’s golf team shot a 1-under 291 to move into eighth place after two rounds of the Margaret Moses Branch NCAA Fall Preview being played at the UNM Championship Golf Course (par 73, 6,351 yards). Complete results and live scoring are available at www.golfstat.com.
The Lobos shaved nine shots off their first-round total and are at 591. They moved up three spots after starting the day tied for 11th with Wake Forest. UNM is 18 strokes behind top-ranked Duke.
UNM actually got to 5-under on its round and into fourth place early on the back nine on the strength of Alexandra Phelps’ three straight birdies. Phelps, who shot an opening-round 84, finished with a 2-under 71. The senior from Albuquerque climbed to 5-under after a birdie on 14, but bogeyed the next three holes.
Duke held on to its four-shot advantage after shooting a 6-under 286. The Blue Devils are at 573. Southern California, which fired a tournament-low round of 285, moved into second place at 577. Arizona State is nine shots back at 582, or 2-under. The remaining 15 teams in the 18-team field are over par.
Southern Cal’s Dewi Claire Schreefel grabbed the individual lead at 9-under 137 thanks to a 4-under 69 today. Schreefel holds a one-shot lead over first-round leader Taylore Karle from Pepperdine. Karle shot 2-under 71 and is at 8-under 138. Arizona’s Alison Walshe is a shot back at 7-under 139.
Duke was led by junior Amanda Blumenherst, who blazed a 6-under 30 on the back nine. She finished with a 5-under 68 and is tied with Vanderbilt’s Liebelei Lawrence for fourth at 141, 5-under par.
Sophomore Jodi Ewart is the top Lobo performer. She shot a 2-under 71 and is tied for 15th at 145. Juniors Mikaela Backstedt and Py Bengtsson are in a five-way tie for 26th at 2-over 148. Backstedt shot a 75 while Bengtsson had a 74 for the second straight day.
Phelps is at 9-over 155 while sophomore Morgan Grantham had an 82 for a two-round total of 161.
Senior Giselle Claux, playing as an individual, shot 77 and is at 156.
The final round begins Wednesday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. locally.
The UNM Championship Course is the site of the 2008 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships. UNM hosts the event next May 20-23.
