ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico senior tennis student-athlete Lucy Scott will be competing against world ranked professional tennis players in the Coleman Vision Tennis Championships at the Tanoan Country Club in Albuquerque. The qualifying rounds begin on Sunday (Sept. 16) and the events conclude on Sunday (Sept. 23) with both the singles and doubles finals. This year is the 10th Anniversary for the event in Albuquerque.
“I’m really excited, I really can’t describe it. Just to think about the people that I will be playing against, they are professional players with rankings in the 500 or 700s in the world,” Scott said.” I have been playing really well and I am thankful to Kathy and Roy for giving me the chance to see what I can do against the top players in the world.”
Scott, will be competing as an individual (this will not count towards her record but she can gain WTA ranking points) in the singles event. The UNM Women’s Tennis team is given a wild card slot each year and the coaching staff selected Scott based on her play this summer. Scott concluded the summer by winning both the singles and doubles titles at the Lobo Labor Day Open Tournament.
“This is an unbelievable opportunity for Lucy, especially being a senior. She has seen other UNM tennis athletes play this event in the past so she knows the kind of caliber of players she will be up against, but she is real excited and has nothing to lose.” head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said.
The entire women’s tennis team will be out at the festivities on Sunday. The student-athletes will be hosting the Mid-School Tennis Clinics from Noon-2 pm on Sunday. Along with a chance to meet the student-athletes, the middle school participants will get a chance to learn tennis skills.
