The Lobo defense had the upper hand today during the annual Fan Photo Day at University Stadium. The 90-minute scrimmage marked the end of preseason camp. The University of New Mexico opens the 2007 fall semester Monday. The Lobos raise the curtain on their 109th football season two weeks from tonight at UTEP. Kickoff is 8 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally by CSTV. The home opener is Sept. 8 against New Mexico State.
On a warm, sultry afternoon, an experienced and deep Lobo defense intercepted five passes and recovered four fumbles. Junior safety Blake Ligon had a big day as he picked off two of sophomore QB Donovan Porterie’s attempts, returning one 50 yards inside the 10-yard line. Sophomore S Clint McPeek, senior LB Cody Kase and senior S Tyson Ditmore also had interceptions for the defense.
Porterie completed 11 of 22 passes for 127 yards, but was intercepted four times. Senior reserve Bryan Clampitt was 2 of 7 for 12 yards and one interception while freshman Brad Gruner had 18 yards on 2 of 5 passing.
The Lobo running game was somewhat effective, though, grinding out 158 yards on 35 carries. True freshman James Wright was the leading ball carrier with 46 yards on nine totes, including a game-high run of 41 yards. Junior Rodney Ferguson, the reigning MWC rushing leader, rushed six times for 44 yards, including a 15-yard TD. That was the lone touchdown for the offense. Ferguson also caught a pass for 13 yards.
Senior Travis Brown, a preseason first team all-Mountain West Conference selection, was the leading receiver with 5 receptions for 65 yards.
Adam Richards, a true freshman from Hobbs, N.M., made both of his field goals from 33 and 42 yards.
