Albuquerque, N.M. — Former New Mexico women’s golfer Shelly (Chilcoat) Schlagel has been named an assistant coach today in an announcement by head coach Jill Trujillo. Schlagel completes the UNM staff and brings over 15 years of proven golf experience to the position. With the addition of Schlagel, UNM adds an excellent teacher, and an individual with great leadership and organizational skills that will allow the Lobos to continue to compete at the national level.

“The very first person I had in mind for the position was Shelly,” said head coach Jill Trujillo. “She has extensive knowledge of the game and is an incredible fund-raiser. Shelly is a big factor in getting our women’s golf program where we want it to be. Her charisma and true love of the game is exactly what we need and I couldn’t be happier with the choice. The coming years are going to be an exciting time for Lobo women’s golf.”

Schlagel comes to UNM after serving as the membership and marketing director at Four Hills Country Club in Albuquerque since January 2006. During her time at Four Hills, Schlagel was responsible for recruiting new members, developing a marketing plan, networking, coordinating corporate outings, event sales and serving as a golf shop buyer and merchandiser.

Prior to Four Hills, Schlagel spent 11 years at Tanoan Country Club in Albuquerque as the Pro Shop Manager. Schlagel’s responsibilities included overall management of the pro shop, maintaining budgets, merchandising, golf instruction and coordination of corporate outings. Schlagel completed the apprentice and Class B portions of the LPGA program while at Tanoan. She also developed a summer golf program for over 200 youth and directed numerous nationwide Women in Golf Day outings.

Schlagel’s first coaching position came in September of 2004 when she was named the head girls golf coach at Academy High School in Albuquerque. Schlagel held the position for the 2004-05 academic year, mentoring Laura Wolfe to the 2005 New Mexico state high school championship.

Schlagel’s playing career at UNM extended from 1990-94 and was highlighted by two All-WAC honors. She earned all-conference in 1992 and again in 1993 after back-to-back stellar campaigns. Schlagel excelled in the classroom and was also named Academic All-American from 1993-94. She was recognized as Academic All-WAC from 1992-94.
