The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team received a No. 10 preseason ranking in CollegeSoccerNews.com’s Top-30 today. The Lobos are coming off their third straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Title and return nine starters for the 2007 season. This is the second year in a row New Mexico has been ranked in the Top-10 in the preseason. CollegeSoccerNews.com picked UNM No. 9 in last year’s kick-off rankings.

“It is a great honor to be considered a preseason top-10 team, but as we all know it is the rankings at the end of the season that matter the most,” stated UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “We are still a young team and I think we have a lot to prove, but we do have the potential to be very good. Last year, expectations we not as high and there was not as much pressure, but there are no surprises this season. We have got to be consistent, mature and score goals because a preseason ranking doesn’t win games. Right now we are focused on our exhibition matches and getting ready for the season opener against Akron.”

The Lobos open the season with a pair of exhibition matches against No. 11 Notre Dame on Aug. 23 and No. 8 Indiana on Aug. 26 in Fort Wayne, Ind. The regular season starts with a trip to Akron on Aug. 31 in the opening night of the Westfield Insurance Cup in Akron, Ohio. UNM will also face Hartwick in the event on Sept. 1.

The Lobos’ home opener is set for Friday, Sept. 7, against Loyola Marymount in the opening night of the NIKE/TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational. UNM also faces Cincinnati in the event on Sunday, Sept. 9.

A big weekend at the UNM Soccer Complex begins on Friday, Sept. 14, when New Mexico hosts No. 17 Washington in the NIKE/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational. All four teams in the 2007 NIKE/Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational are ranked in the preseason top-20 with No. 7 SMU facing No. 3 UC-Santa Barbara in the neutral match on Friday. The Lobos will take on the Gauchos, the defending national champions, on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 3:00 p.m. (M.D.T.).

New Mexico closes out its non-conference schedule with a tough California road trip. UNM travels to Cal State Northridge on Thursday, Sept. 20, and to San Francisco on Saturday, Sept. 22.

MPSF action begins on Oct. 5 when the Lobos host Denver. UNM will be gunning for its fourth straight MPSF title in 2007. In all, the Lobos play nine home games in 2007. For season and group ticket information click here.
