The University of New Mexico was well represented in the professional golfing world this weekend thanks to the play of a pair of former Lobos. D.J. Brigman (1996-99) finished tied for 30th at the U.S. Open in Oakmont, Pa., equaling his best finish of the season. Spencer Levin (2004-05) shot an 11-under 277 to win the Times Colonist Open in Vancouver Island, B.C., his second-straight win on the Canadian Tour.
Brigman made the cut at the U.S. Open for the second time in his career and posted a 17-over total of 297 (74-74-74-75) in the 72-hole event. He had one of the more consistent weekends of golf and was 12 shots off the pace set by Angel Cabrera (69-71-76-69=285). Brigman finished higher than some of the top golfers in the world, including No. 2 Phil Mickelson (cut), No. 4 Adam Scott (cut), No. 5 Ernie Els (+21), No. 6 Henrik Stenson (cut), No. 8 Geoff Ogilvy (+18) and No. 9 Luke Donald (cut).
Brigman’s finish at the Open tied his best of the season after placing 30th at the AT&T Classic on May 20. He made his third straight cut this weekend and his sixth cut overall in 2007. He owns a 71.06 scoring average in 31 competitive rounds and has a total of $136,159 in earnings in 2007.
Spencer Levin celebrated his 23rd birthday with a three-shot victory at the Canadian Tour’s Times Colonist Open in British Columbia over the weekend. He is the first to win back-to-back Canadian Tour events since 2005 after winning the Iberostar Riveria Maya Open in Riveria Maya, Mexico, during an international swing of the tour on May 14-20.
Levin is currently No. 1 on the Canadian Tour’s Order of Merit with $65,719 in earnings in five events. He is well ahead of second place Adam Bland who has $49,697 in six events this season. He is third in the stroke-average rankings at 68.25 in 20 total rounds.
