DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The 19th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team finished 22nd at the 2007 NCAA National Championships Friday after shooting a 27-over par in the final round. The Lobos conclude their 13th national championships appearance after competing against the top programs in the country. UNM was 102-over par for the four day event played at the par 72, 6,351 yard LPGA International Legends Golf Course. Freshman Jodi Ewart led the Lobos individually and set a new UNM freshman scoring record with a 73.35 average.

Freshman Jodi Ewart finishes one of the best individual seasons in school history and surpasses the previous mark of 73.40 set by sophomore Mikaela Backstedt last year. In 11 tournaments this year, Ewart placed in the top 10 six times including winning the Mountain West Conference individual title. The North Yorkshire, England native was also named the MWC Co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.

Ewart tied for 50th place at 18-over par for the event and was 3-over par 75 on the final day. Ewart carded rounds of 76, 76, 79 and 75 for a total of 306. Junior Giselle Claux shot a 4-over par 76 and tied for 72nd. Claux had her best round of 2-over par 74 in the opening round and finished with a total of 311. Backstedt tied for 121st individually and was 11-over par on the final day.

Duke captured its third straight team title Friday after finishing the tournament 18-over par. Purdue finished second at 33-over par, while UCLA took third at 34-over par. Arkansas’s Stacy Lewis claimed the individual title at 6-under par and had the best round of the tournament in the finals. Lewis, who was an individual qualifier, fired a 6-under par 66 to dominate the field by four strokes. Purdue’s Christel Boeljon and Southern California’s Paola Moreno tied for second at 2-under par.

As a team, UNM placed in the top 10 in every tournament heading into the national championships. The Lobos continued the great tradition of excellence in 2006-07 with another championship appearance and remain among one of the top programs in the nation.
